Deer Collision Safety Tips for Fall Drivers

Embracing Fall's Beauty and Risks

As fall paints our landscapes with vibrant hues, it's easy to get lost in the season's splendor. Yet, amidst the beauty lies an often-overlooked danger: increased deer activity leading to accidents. These collisions account for over $1 billion annually in damages, averaging around $3,000 per repair. While daunting, there are steps you can take to safeguard yourself and your vehicle during this high-risk period, particularly from October to December.

Stay Safe with These Key Tips

  • Use your high beams wisely. When driving at night without oncoming traffic, high beams can help you spot a deer's reflective eyes from a distance.
  • Heed the signs. Deer crossing signs indicate high-traffic areas for deer. Slowing down in these zones allows more reaction time.
  • Be mindful of peak activity hours. Deer are most active in the afternoon, particularly hard to see at dawn and dusk. Be extra cautious during these times, especially on rural roads or in wooded areas.
  • Look for more than one. If you see a deer cross the road, slow down and stay alert. Deer typically travel in groups, so others may follow.
  • Know when not to swerve. If a deer appears suddenly, brake firmly but maintain your lane. Swerving could lead to more severe accidents with other vehicles, trees, or guardrails.
  • Use your seat belt. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of serious injury in a collision.
  • If a collision occurs, take the proper steps. Move your vehicle to a safe location, turn on your hazard lights, call the police, avoid approaching the animal, and contact your insurance provider to report the incident.

Preparedness is Key

Although deer collisions pose a significant threat during the fall, adopting these cautionary measures can greatly reduce your risk.
